Ali Hosseini (b. 1996) is an Iranian composer based in Helsinki, Finland. He is currently studying towards a Master’s degree in Composition at the Sibelius Academy. Prior to that, he received his Bachelor’s degree in Classical Piano at the University of Tehran. Among his recent orchestral projects, Quasar (2023) was read by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (FRSO) at Musiikkitalo in Helsinki, using sound masses, spectral elements, and textural writing, to explore the quasar. Moreover, Black Hole Heart (2024) for wind orchestra, a jazz-influenced piece utilizing overtone structures, will be performed by the Helsinki Police Band later this year. On the chamber side, Beast Machine (2022) for flute, clarinet, and spatialized electronics, was performed by defunensemble at Musiikkitalo, focusing on the merging of the electronics with the acoustic timbres, and showcasing the colossal “beast” in the electronics. On the acoustic side, Gereh (2022) for organ was also performed in the same year by Eerik Ohtamaa with the main organ of the Kallio church, employing the lowest pedals of the organ to create acoustic beating. Also, an upcoming microtonal piece for meantone harpsichord and 31-TET lumatone will be performed at the Sibelius Academy’s concert hall in 2024, delving into the colors of this particular tuning. Aside from concert music for large and small ensembles, he has been creating soundtracks for various linear and non-linear media as well. As a composer, his main concern has been exploring the weirdness of the universe, and shedding light on the ignored.
