Matthias Guntner is the winner of the Alba Rosa Viëtor Composition Competition with his work Conjunction at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam on Friday 16 February, 2024. “All the pieces are of high quality,” jury chairman Willem Jeths spoke of the works of the four finalists. He praised Matthias Guntner for his use of microtones and extended techniques. Matthias was the only composer to use the high soprano recorder, while the other finalists were particularly fascinated by the dark colours of the bass and tenor recorder in combination with the double bass. The Audience Award went to Ali Hosseini (1996) from Iran, who studies composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. The works were performed in a unique line-up: Erik Bosgraaf – recorder, Ralph van Raat – piano and Sasha Witteveen – double bass.

The competition formed the heart of the fifth edition of the Alba Rosa Viva! Festival. The well-attended festival is an initiative of the Alba Rosa Viëtor Foundation in collaboration with the Muziekgebouw. Artistic director is Reinild Mees. The festival’s namesake, Alba Rosa Viëtor (1889-1979), was one of the first female composers to be played in North America by leading orchestras. Viëtor was a prominent member of the Washington Composers Club (WCC). In 1919, she married Dutch businessman Jan Fresemann Viëtor.
