On November 28, 2014, Willem Jeths was appointed Composer Laureate during the Buma Classical Convention in TivoliVredenburg. In the two years that followed, he missed no opportunity to position himself as an ambassador of new Dutch music.
He put the Dutch musical heritage of the 20th century in the spotlight, focused on the latest generation of composers, advocated music education and casually reflected on the current state of affairs in the field of musical composition:
“In the second half of the 20th century, an explosion took place in our music culture,” says Jeths. “The supply is now more fragmented and varied than ever. The challenge facing a contemporary composer is to distill something authentic from this vast ocean. Whether he succeeds in this does not really depend on the concept of ‘innovation’. I think passion and inspiration are more relevant today.”
