Matthias Guntner

Matthias Guntner was born on August 21st 2002 in Upper-Austria, a place known for its musical culture and tradition. Always being fascinated by everyday sounds like church bells and sirens when he was a child, he received his first piano lessons at the age of seven. From 2015 to 2021, he was a student of pianist Stefan Gurtner who recognized his potential as a composer and introduced him to Till Alexander Körber, professor at Anton Bruckner University in Linz, who eventually became Guntner’s teacher in composition and music theory from 2017 to 2021.

After his Matura in 2020 and a year of community service in a retirement home, Guntner now studies film music composition at University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Walter Werzowa as well as business at Vienna University of Economics and Business. From 2021 to 2023, he studied composition and music theory with Dietmar Schermann.

As a member of Oejfv, an Austrian filmmakers association, he has been able to collect experience as a soundtrack composer since he was 16. He is also a member of BelCanto Arts, an event management society founded by Austrian tenor Max Lütgendorff, organizing concerts and other events focused on classical and contemporary music.

As of 2024, Guntner’s music will also be featured for media productions all around the globe as part of the Red Bull music portfolio.

2024: Winner of the Alba Rosa Viëtor Composition Competition in Amsterdam

2021: 1st price at the 2nd International Balsys composition competition in Vilnius (Lithuania)

2021: 2nd price at the composition competition “Beethovenjahr 2020”, initiated by the Composer’s Association of Upper-Austria (OÖKB)

2020: 2nd price at national “Jugend komponiert” composition competition

2019: Dr. Josef Ratzenböck promotion prize in composition by the State of Upper Austria (Dr. Josef Ratzenböck-Stipendium in Komposition)
