Alba Rosa Viëtor Composition Competition 2023/2024

For the 5th time, the Alba Rosa Viëtor Composition Competition will be part of the Alba Rosa Viva! Festival, named after the Italian composer, violinist and pianist Alba Rosa Viëtor. Previous prize winners like Mathilde Wantenaar have started their international career based on winning our competiton.

The Alba Rosa Viëtor Composition Competition 2023/24 invites young composers to submit an original work, not exceeding 9 minutes, for sopranino/soprano/alto/tenor or bass recorder, double bass and piano. Composers 35 years of age and under, residing anywhere in the world, are invited to apply.

Chairman of the Jury is Dutch composer Willem Jeths. He will be assisted by English composer Judith Weir, Russian composer Elena Firsova, Dutch composer Mathilde Wantenaar and artistic leader Reinild Mees.

Four works will be selected by the jury to be premiered on February 16, 2024 during the Alba Rosa Viva! Festival at Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Amsterdam (The Netherlands). The selected pieces will be performed by three brilliant musicians: Erik Bosgraaf (recorder), Ralph van Raat (piano) and Sasha Witteveen (double bass).

Rules

  1. Composers born after October 15, 1988, residing anywhere in the world, are invited to apply.
  2. Only one composition may be submitted. This original work should neither have been published, performed in public and/or broadcast previously, nor awarded a prize in any other composition competition. 
  3. The composition should be written for sopranino/soprano/alto/tenor or bass recorder, double bass and piano. The work should not exceed the lenght of 9 minutes.
  4. The jury (formed by the internationally acclaimed composers Willem Jeths, chairman, Judith Weir, Elena Firsova, Mathilde Wantenaar and artistic leader Reinild Mees) will choose the four finalists whose works will be performed by three brilliant musicians during the Alba Rosa Viva! Festival at the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, Amsterdam, on Friday 16 February 2024. The finalists will be notified by E-Mail.
  5. The winner of the Alba Rosa Viëtor Prize (€ 3.000) will be appointed by the Jury, the Audience Prize (€ 1.000) by the public, after hearing the performances of the compositions of the four finalists on Friday 16 February 2024. The prize-giving ceremony will take place immediately after the concert.
  6. The application deadline is 15 October, 2023. There is no registration fee. In order to apply, one should fill out the form below, followed by an E-mail sent to Mail@albarosavietor.com with a number of attachments (listed below). Please note that both the filled out registration form and an E-mail with the attachments listed below is required for a valid application.
    Each E-mail should include:
    • The full score, with separate instrumental parts, as a PDF file, formatted as A4, created in either Sibelius or Finale. The score does not have to be anonymous.
    • A (sample or live) recording of the work in MP3 format.
    • A statement by the composer that the submitted work has neither been published, performed in public and/or broadcast previously, nor awarded a prize in any other composition competition.
    • A 1-page PDF-file containing a copy of the composer’s passport. Date of birth should be after 15 October, 1988.
    • A 1-page PDF-file with a Professional Resume (education, scholarships, degrees earned, prizes, performances, website URL etc.).
